Sligachan Bridge
The Sligachan Old Bridge was built between 1810 and 1818 by engineer Thomas Telford. The bridge is for pedestrians and cyclists only following construction of a new road bridge parallel to it on the A87. It was listed as a Category B and scheduled in 1971 and 1974, respectively.
Located in Black the western seaboard is Sligachan. The Scotland you want to come to see the view that is in paintings of the Red and Black Cuillin with Glen Sligachan between them. There is a stone built bridge in the foreground with the River Sligachan flowing under it. Mountains in the distance are menacing and not for the faint hearted or ill prepared to climb.
Walking or climbing in the Cuillins is a dangerous place. The weather is unpredictable, many routes, maps or guidebooks are for the experienced and even they can get into troublek.
The Sligachan Hotel was built in 1830. There was an inn at the head of the loch prior to that, near the shelly shore from which the hotel took its name. This large and well-appointed hotel was the first and often only port of call for climbers who visited the island but these days there are other options.
